Taekwondo has a deep meaning in each syllable.‘TAE’ () has the meaning of kicking, stepping on or trampling on, ‘KWON’() means fist, throwing a punch, and ‘DO’ () means the way, reason, source. In other words, ‘Tae-kwon’ (跆拳) can be understood in the physical sense and ‘Do’ () in the mental sense. For such a reason, Taekwondo is a martial arts sport that allows both physical and mental training.

In the old days, the Greek philosopher Aristotle emphasized the importance of educating the mind, saying “Educating the mind without educating the heart is no education at all.”If you apply his quoteto Taekwondo, you may understand like this. Taekwondo physical training is important, but it is essential that the spiritual aspect of Do is much more important for practicing Taekwondo.

Then, the question arises, 'What should I do to practice DO?'From now on, I will briefly introduce three ways to practice DO(spiritual practice). It is not so difficult that anyone can practice if they decide once.

First, build your muscles.

In summer, the empty gym during winter is crowded with people. So did the gym I went to. In the summer, people get more exposed. That’s why people want to make their bodies look great.People find a gym, pay for it, take time to exercise.Theyexercise with heavy dumbbells and instruments from dawn until late night to build great muscles ontheir bodies.Sometimes it's hard and painful, but people endure it.Muscles are created under the stress of weight. When they endure repeated stresses of heavy weight, they can build great muscles of your body.

How can we build the muscles of the heart? You can think of it like the principle of building muscles of your body. Stressing the heart is a burdensome to do.Do burdensome things that aren't always familiar and good. And overcome your limitations by challenging things you want to avoid. This may sound like something big to you, but you may start by keeping a promise with yourself that you have not kept well.If you start with something small and get over it, you will gradually feel a great sense of accomplishment. As you go beyond the burden one by one, you will build muscles in your mind little by little. If your muscles are strong enough, you will find yourself able to face on any burdens and unfamiliar surroundings boldly.

Second, practice lowering your heart.

I recently visited my Taekwondo senior in order to learn and practice Taekwondo smashing skills.Whoever sees him, he is much older than me.But as soon as he saw me, he bowed his head and greeted me politely. I was a bit embarrassed by this, but soon I lowed myself much more before him.We receive greater respect and honor by others when we respect them. There is the old proverb that everyone knows, ‘the boughs that bear most hang lowest.’Lowering your heart makes others feel good and eventually give you respect and honor back. You don't need exalt yourself in order to be honored by others. Just lower yourself first before others and then they will respect and exalt you.

If your head is stiff, you know you look high right now, but that doesn't last long.If you are a true martial artist, you need to have the courage to bow your head first, even if you are olderand have higher dan ofTaekwondo level than others. This also does not happen in a day. It is important to practice small things first. Never say rudelyto a younger stranger. When you meet someone for the first time, Korea is the only country in the world that asks about their age and ranks them.If you have the attitude of bowing your head first, you are qualified to be recognized as a true Taekwondoist.

Third, always check your brake function of the mind.

In a car sales advertisement, a car runs very fast on a wide road.According to the U.S. Digital Trends news article dated on 4thJanuary 2018, the top speed of the world's fastest car is 485 km/h.So is the fastest car the best car? No matter how fast a car is, if the brakes are bad, it's the worst. Because brake performance is directly related to life of driver.

The same goes for the mind. This is the worst thing if the brake that is responsible for your needs breaks down. We've often seen so many stars break down in their breaks in the mind and fall into hell overnight. There is a springing desire for everyone. This is a very natural phenomenon. But not everyone has the power to control these needs. This is also the power obtained through the training of the mind.In fact, when you have a desire to restrain the power is actually good to grow. For the desires of the heart grow larger as they grow. I am also a mother raising children. When the child was young, the desire was small. However, the needs of children who became middle and high school students have grown incomparably with those in kindergarten.

Self-control is not raised overnight. You should be able to restrain small things, but you can exercise restraint even big things. If you have a lack of restraint, you can also try to create an environment to increase your restraint. I loved watching TV. One day, I stayed up all night and watched a drama. But after seeing the regret came utterly. So I dared to get rid of the TV at home. I have lived without a TV for more than 10 years, and now I can't even think about it. Times previously spent meaninglessly watching TV can now be used for other things, making them more rewarding.

All three of the above, building the muscles of the mind, lowering the position of the heart, and improving the braking function of the mind is all how to train the mind. This mind training cannot be done in a day. But it's not that hard.We also learn, train, and practice Taekwondo motions and gestures for nearly a year to pass Taekwondo 1st Dan test. The mind training also takes as much time and effort as physical training.

If you practice Taekwondo, you will recall Taekwondo is trained only with your body. However, in order to become a martial arts sport that is truly faithful to its meaning, Taekwondo should be trained for performing spiritual parts called ‘DO’ together. We should try to be Taekwondo-ist rather than Taekwon-ist. If one understands that the mind should be trained with the body during Taekwondo training, everyone will practice the body as well as the mind.I hope that everyone who loves and trains Taekwondo will be able to faithfully train and instruct both body and the mind to grow into true Taekwondoist.
