이동섭 국기원장, 미 트럼프 대통령 취임식 초청 참석 Lee Dong-seop, President of Kukkiwon, Invited to and Attends President Trump's Inauguration‘미국 지부장 MOU 체결식 및 2025년 추진 사업 간담회’도 개최 … 태권도 외교 강화
오는 1월 20일(현지 시간) 워싱턴 D.C.에서 열리는 취임식에 초청된 이 원장은 취임식참석을 비롯, ‘미국 지부장 MOU 체결식 및 2025년 추진 사업 간담회’ 등을 개최함으로써 태권도를 통한 외교 활동을 강화한다.
이 원장과 트럼프 대통령의 인연은 2021년으로 거슬러 올라간다.
2021년 11월 19일(현지 시간) 미국 플로리다주 팜비치의 마러라고 리조트를 방문한 이 원장은 트럼프 대통령에게 태권도 명예 9단증을 수여하고 태권도복을 증정했다.
태권도 명예 유단자가 된 트럼프 대통령은 “태권도가 최고의 무도”라며 재선에 성공하면 도복을 입고 의회에서 연설하겠다는 약속을 해 화제가 되기도 했다.
태권도로 맺어진 인연을 바탕으로 취임식에 참석하게 된 이 원장은 방미 기간 동안, 미국 태권도 발전과 보급에 기여한 상‧하원 의원을 만나 태권도 명예 단증을 수여하고 현안을 논의할 예정이다.
또한, 국기원 미국 지부장들과 ‘MOU 체결식 및 2025년 추진 사업 간담회’를 개최해 업무 협의를 진행한다.
간담회에서는 2025년 각종 사업 추진 계획과 현황을 점검함으로써 필요한 사업 계획을 수립, 가시적인 성과를 낼 수 있도록 실질적인 지원책을 마련할 예정이다.
이동섭 국기원장은 “트럼프 대통령은 누구보다 태권도의 가치를 잘 알고 있는 사람이다. 이번 취임식 참석을 계기로 세계에 태권도의 위상을 알리는 것은 물론 미국 내에서 태권도가 재도약할 수 있게 되기를 바란다”고 소감을 밝혔다.
한편, 국기원은 지난해 10월 해외 네트워크 구축 사업 일환으로 미국 지부장 8명을 임명하고 미국 내 국기원의 가치를 대외적으로 알리기 위해 목적사업 확대를 추진하고 있다. Taekwondo Demonstrates Diplomatic Power as Kukkiwon President Lee Dong-seop Attends Donald Trump's Inauguration Ceremony
President Lee Dong-seop of Kukkiwon has been invited to attend the inauguration ceremony of Donald Trump as the 47th President of the United States, which will be held on January 20 (local time) in Washington, D.C.
During his visit, President Lee plans to strengthen Taekwondo's role in diplomacy by participating in the inauguration ceremony and hosting events such as the "MOU Signing Ceremony with U.S. Regional Directors and 2025 Business Planning Meeting."
The relationship between President Lee and President Trump dates back to 2021.
On November 19, 2021 (local time), President Lee visited Mar-a-Lago in Palm Beach, Florida, where he presented President Trump with an honorary 9th Dan Taekwondo certificate and a Taekwondo uniform.
After receiving the honorary Taekwondo rank, President Trump described Taekwondo as "the ultimate martial art" and famously pledged to wear the uniform while delivering a speech in Congress if re-elected, garnering significant attention.
Building on this relationship formed through Taekwondo, President Lee will attend the inauguration and meet with U.S. lawmakers who have contributed to the development and promotion of Taekwondo in the country. He plans to present them with honorary Taekwondo certificates and discuss current issues.
In addition, President Lee will hold an "MOU Signing Ceremony and 2025 Business Planning Meeting" with U.S. branch directors to collaborate on various initiatives.
The meeting will focus on assessing plans and progress for projects scheduled for 2025, enabling the development of concrete strategies and providing practical support to achieve visible outcomes.
President Lee expressed his hopes, stating, "President Trump deeply understands the value of Taekwondo. I hope my attendance at the inauguration will not only showcase the global prominence of Taekwondo but also lead to its resurgence in the United States."
Meanwhile, Kukkiwon has been working to expand its presence internationally. In October of last year, as part of its overseas network development initiatives, Kukkiwon appointed eight regional directors in the U.S. to promote the organization's mission and values more effectively.
